New Apprenticeships in the Screen Industries

The Making it Reel – Film & Television Traineeships Program is a Skills Victoria funded project and an initiative of Verve and screen industry partners to address the need for stronger on-the-job training in the film and television industry.

Making it Reel will set up traineeships in technical and production roles on film sets and production studios. Verve is aiming to connect talented and eligible trainees with screen industry employers in these four vocations:

  • Trainee Production Accountant (CUF40107 Certificate IV in Screen Media)
  • Trainee Production Runner (CUF30107 Certificate III in Media)
  • Lighting Technician Apprenticeship (UEE30807 Certificate III in Electrotechnology)
  • Set Construction Apprenticeship (CUF30307 Certificate III in Scenery and Set Construction)

For over a decade, the screen industry has expressed a need to provide on-the-job training for its technical and production workforce. Whilst historically vocational training was provided by studios such as Grundy’s and the ABC, since these were shut down in the mid-80s no single organisation has stepped up to fill the training void. In the absence of an established training organisation for the screen industries, Making it Reel partners are piloting a series of traineeships to respond to the industry’s urgent need for structured training programs. Making it Reel aims to place trainees in five targeted areas including Set Construction, Production Running, Production Accounting, and Lighting Technician roles. The project will also seek out industry veterans to become certified in Training and Assessment to ensure industry experience and knowledge is entrusted to a new skilled base of workers in Victoria.
